Great Ocean Road Iconic Attractions

The Great Ocean Road is home to some of the most stunning attractions in the Otways. Iconic spots like the 12 Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, and London Bridge showcase the rugged beauty of the coastline. These natural wonders are must-see highlights along the Great Ocean Road, offering unforgettable experiences,  scenery and photo opportunities.

These are the main ones, there are lots of hikes to other lookouts, enjoy exploring the coast.

I’ve put together an Itinerary for a day trip from Bimbi Park to see all listed and Johanna Beach -NOT FOR SWIMMING- on the way through. You could also stop at Yatsies or the Perch in Lavers Hill for a snack.

1. The Gibson Steps

The Gibson Steps offer a unique coastal experience. Carved into the cliffside, these steps take you down to the beach, where you can stand at the base of towering limestone cliffs and look up at the enormous rock formations rising from the ocean. It’s one of those spots where you really get a sense of how small you are against the power of nature. The views from the beach are unbeatable, especially as you watch the waves roll in and see the nearby 12 Apostles from a whole new perspective. The Gibson Steps are a must for anyone wanting to get up close and personal with the dramatic beauty of the Otways coastline.

2. The 12 Apostles

The 12 Apostles are one of Australia’s most iconic natural landmarks. These limestone stacks rise from the Southern Ocean, sculpted by wind and water over millions of years. Although only eight remain standing today, they are particularly stunning at sunrise or sunset when the light casts shadows across the ocean. The 12 Apostles offer breathtaking views and unforgettable photo opportunities, showcasing the dramatic power of nature along the Great Ocean Road.

3. Loch Ard Gorge

Loch Ard Gorgeis one of those spots that takes your breath away. The towering cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and sandy beach make it a must-visit along the Great Ocean Road. The gorge is named after the shipwreck of the Loch Ard in 1878, and you can really feel the drama of the story as you walk the trails or explore the beach below. Whether you’re here for the history or just to soak up the beauty, Loch Ard Gorge is an unforgettable stop in the Otways. From the car park you can also walk to The Razorback Lookout, Tom and Eva Lookoutand The Island Arch Lookout.

4. London Bridge

London Bridge, also known as London Arch, is a natural rock formation along the Great Ocean Road. Once a double-arched bridge, the structure partially collapsed in 1990, leaving a single arch standing. The dramatic coastal views and sheer cliffs make it an incredible spot to visit, especially with the waves crashing below. It’s one of those places that really shows off the raw power of nature, and it’s a great photo stop on your Otways adventure. Whether you’re here to admire the geology or just take in the scenery, London Bridge is a memorable sight along the coasst.

5. The Grotto

The Grotto is a hidden gem along the Great Ocean Road, offering a peaceful and unique experience. This natural rock formation is part cave, part archway, and part sinkhole, creating a serene pool of water that reflects the rugged cliffs and sky above. Unlike the more dramatic coastal landmarks, the Grotto feels like a quiet retreat from the wild waves and towering cliffs of the Otways. A short walk takes you down to a viewing platform where you can look out over the calm waters and take in the tranquil atmosphere. It’s the perfect spot to stop and appreciate the softer, more serene side of the coastline.
